Frequently Asked Questions

What is First Tee — San Francisco?

First Tee — San Francisco is a youth development organization that uses golf to teach life skills and values like growing with grit, creating reachable goals, using good judgement, building positive self-identity, and many more.

What ages can participate in First Tee programs?

Our programs are open to youth ages 6 to 17. We group participants by age to ensure an engaging and supportive environment for everyone.

Does my child need to have golf experience to join?

No prior golf experience is necessary! First Tee welcomes all skill levels — from complete beginners to experienced junior golfers.

When are classes offered throughout the year?

We offer programs in seasonal sessions — typically in the spring, summer, and fall. In spring and fall sessions runs for several weeks, with classes held once or twice per week depending on age group and level. In the summer, we also offer half-day, week-long camps that provide a fun, immersive experience in both golf and life skills.

A full schedule and registration dates are available on our website ahead of each session.

How do I register my child for a session?

You can register online through our Registration Portal during open enrollment periods. Be sure to create an account and keep an eye on session dates, as spots can fill quickly.

What equipment does my child need to participate?

We provide golf equipment at no cost. If your child has their own clubs, they are welcome to bring them, but it’s not required.

Where are classes held?

Most of our programs take place at the Sandy Tatum Learning Center located at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Most of our on-course classes take place at Golden Gate Park Golf Course in San Francisco. Specific locations are listed in each session’s details.

Is there a cost to participate?

We are committed to making our programs accessible to all. While there is a nominal session fee, financial aid is available and no child is turned away for lack of ability to pay.

What should my child wear to class?

Participants should wear comfortable, athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes. Layers are recommended since weather can change quickly in San Francisco.

We do continue classes in light rain or drizzle, so please pack a rain jacket or appropriate rain gear to help your child stay dry and comfortable.

How are life skills incorporated into golf lessons?

We use the First Tee’s nationally recognized curriculum to teach lessons in life skills through golf-based activities, games, and discussions.

How can I get involved as a volunteer or supporter?

We welcome volunteers, mentors, and supporters! Visit our Get Involved page to learn more about how you can help make a difference in the lives of local youth.

Can I stay and watch my child during class?

Yes! Parents are welcome to stay and observe from designated areas. We encourage positive support, but ask that you allow coaches to lead the sessions without interruption.

How can I support my child’s learning outside of class?

You can reinforce life skills at home by asking your child what they learned after class, encouraging them to practice the life skills they learned, and even playing golf together at local courses or driving range.

What happens if it rains or we miss a class?

We monitor weather closely and will notify families via ClassDojo and email about any cancellations. If your child misses a class, don’t worry — our coaches work to keep everyone on track!

How do I get updates about my child’s sessions?

We use ClassDojo to communicate with families! Once your child is registered, you’ll receive an invite to join your child’s class on the app. Through ClassDojo, we share reminders, schedule updates, photos, and announcements so you’re always in the loop.
